The poem ‘The Huntsman’ was written by Edward Lawbury comes under the theme humor. He uses the elements of irony and suspense to bring about humor in the poem. They simply help to depict the unthinking childish behavior of the hunter. The humorous poem has been written by the poets in order to make the reader laugh. They not only make us laugh but also give messages for our life. Most of the poem say something to realize the foolishness and follies in the society. We able to see ourselves in them. The realization paves a way to correct the behavior and to be practical in life. Particularly this poem based on Kenyan folklore. It carries a moral lesson that one should not talk too much. The poem narrates the story of a tragedy of a hunter name Kagwa. It is clear by reading the following lines that he is a man with muscular strength…say something to realize the foolishness and follies in the society. We able to see ourselves in them. “Kagwa hunted the lion”
He is able to hunt lion but unfortunately, he becomes a prey for destiny or circumstance.  “The skull opened its mouth and said”
The poet creates a fearful atmosphere in it the hunter becomes the hunted. Lawbury points out that talking is a good thing but one should not talk too much. It reminds a famous phrase “speech is silver, silent is gold”. According to the above maxim, one should be careful before his speech that means he must think twice before anything. Indirectly the poem expresses that Kagwa has spoken to king foolishly. He should not have spoken about the secret of talking skull to the king. It seems that he talks about the skull in a boast full manner. It shows that he is not able to control his excitement. Seeing a talking skull is not a common matter. It is something special but he has forgotten himself that’s why he met his destiny.Lawbury points out that talking is a good thing but one should not talk too much. “The guard said, ‘kneel down’.
They killed him with sword and spear”
Superficially when we read the poem that Kagwa is physically strong but he lacks wisdom. He is emotionally excited. He must have control over his sentiments. It is natural to express ourselves when we see anything unexpected. Kagwa did the same. Anyway, the talking skull has already told him about the reason of death. lt is vividly depicted here.Kagwa did the same. “Talking brought me here”
He must have realized the meaning of this. He talks to the king in a carefree manner as he is blinded by emotions. The suspense in the quotation is quite obvious. The skull says that his over talking is the reason for the death. It was careless and unnecessary talk which was responsible which is dismissed off the talking skull. Poor Kagwa learns the secret at the cost of his own life
“Huntsman, how did you come here?’
And the dead man answered,
Talking brought me here.”
The poem that has composed in the theme in humor is an evidence of imaginative richness oh the poet. The poem is full of suspense, mystery & supernatural. The general of the poem is gloomy and fearful. The presence of the talking skull and the killing of the hunter terrify the reader. Anyway, the narration of the poem makes the setting real through though exaggerated. The reference made in the poem to the real world add another dimension to its humor and theme. The fictional and crafty setting are wonderful. Apart from enjoying the poem the moral we may learn here is to be watchful of what we speak.in the theme in humor is an evidence of imaginative richness oh the poet.
